I am getting rid of my E39 540i I think. I am in between choices. I work for BMW so a 228i lease will be close to a monthly payment between both.
here is what I have now:
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
I have liked the FR-S as I have an AE86 what I hate is that it is badged as a Scion (just a pet peeve) that makes me lean towards the BRZ.
The 228i feels like a more refined version of both but will cost a bit more.
My main motivation is that I am driving considerably more and I need better fuel economy.

228, just better.

You should get decent MPGs with the 228, and if you're driving farther I think the interior would suit you better.
Edit: damn that's close to me - wish I had $6,500.

I think you've already narrowed down to the 228 vs the BRZ. That is a tough choice. The BRZ is more "pure", but the 228 will definitely feel more mature and understated.
How long do you plan on keeping it? I would go with the one you can afford to buy vs. lease. if you plan on keeping it for the next decade.

If you're driving so much that fuel economy is a significant cost driver wouldn't you exceed the lease mileage limits?

228. Though, you could always rebadge the FR-S as a Toyota.

C6 Corvette. Same money, hell of a lot more power, 30 mpg highway.
Forget the Miata, Corvette is always the answer

I like my BRZ. People bitch about the lack of power, but it's not that bad. If you already have an AE86, you probably wouldn't be worried about having only as much power as the top of the line Corvette in the late 70s. The stock tires are shit, and you'll want to upgrade your brake pads, lines, and fluid before taking it to a track, but even out of the box it's tons of fun. I'm personally not much of a fan of modern bimmers. Too complicated.

If you're driving a lot, do you really want a lease?

I drive between 15-18k a year now in comparison to less than 10k a year previous. I can lease for those ranges

I keep finding reasons to post this picture, now more pertinent than ever as I own/use both cars.
Long story short, these are both fantastic cars and lovely to dive but also very different animals. The 228i is hands down the better daily driver as it is more comfortable, spacious, and has a peppy little 4banger with surprising amounts of torque.
My FR-S isn't stock, so i'll try to dial my comparison back a bit. The FR-S/BRZ is a more purpose driven car, from the moment you get in the seating position tells it all. You feel involved and you are involved, lots more feedback and much more agile ride. This is the car for the canyons and spirited driving.
If you're looking at MT, the 228i has an excellent clutch although the shifter has longer throws than I would like. The FRS/BRZ has a very notchy, short shifter and light clutch pedal. Easy to use in traffic, fun to row through the gears.
I made my choice, FR-S (with exhaust mods) ALL day. I do like the girlfriends 228i on occasion though.

I'd probably go with a 228i 6MT, although I'm a little soured on BMW right now...

I don't know if you get a deal on CPOs but I'd take a look at them if I was you.

the 335d is not that efficient but is a torque monster.
the 328d is tempting but not a big population out there. I am looking for one with Xenons at least.
